A guide to using citation managers including EndNote, Mendeley, and Zotero.

What is Zotero?

Zotero is a free, open-source tool that you can you use to:

  • gather, save, and organize bibliographic data (and PDFs) while you're doing your research
  • create citations and bibliographies while you write
  • share your research with colleagues, your research community, or the world
  • sync your account accross multiple devices

Zotero is able to sense bibliographic information when a book, article, or website is being displayed by revealing an icon in the address bar. All you have to do is click!

Getting Started with Zotero

Zotero has three components:

  • The library that keeps all of your references organized
  • The browser tool that can grab citation information off of a web page
  • The Word (or OpenOffice) plug-in that can produce formatted in-text citations and a bibliography

When you use Firefox, the library and the browser tool are integrated but you will need to download the Word plug-in separately.

When you use Chrome or Safari, the library and the Word plug-in will be integrated but you will need to download the browser tool separately.
