What Do These Specifications Mean?

Build size: This represents the largest dimensions you can have for your print. Printing software such as Makerbot Print (for the Makerbot) and Cura (for the Ultimaker machines) will allow you to modify the size of your designs.

Layer resolution: This refers to the printed height of each layer of the object and as a result, effects the quality and speed of the print. The lower a layer height is, the higher the print quality is but the longer it will take to print.

Filament: the type of plastic utilized by the machine to print objects. Both of the library's 3D printers use PLA (polylactic acid) as their filament type.

File types: These are the formats that you must submit your file in in order for it to print correctly. Some of them are specific to certain applications (such as .thing, which is a file extension used by Thingiverse, the design program for Makerbot), while others (such as .stl and .obj) which are more generic and can be utilized by multiple printer models. We ask that you convert your file to .stl to maintain consistency across platforms. 

Software: This is the recommended software you should be using to design your print, as well as make any necessary modifications (such as changing orientation or scaling down the size). It will give you an estimated time to render. Note that rendering time is not exact. You can use other software to create your design, so long as it is in .stl file type when it is submitted with your form.
