Images & Copyright

In copyright law, images refers to more than just artworks or photographs. The term "images" also refers to maps, diagrams, tables, figures and any other form of static graphic.

In general, you may reuse images for educational purposes, on the premises of Ontario Tech or in the Canvas LMS if the following conditions are met:

  • You are only using one (1) image from a source with multiple images
  • The title, author, source and licence of the image is provided along with the reproduction

Images from Google image search

Google image search is a convenient method for finding images. However, you should always visit the online source of the image in order to assess whether or not you may use the image.

You may:

  • Link to the image
  • Use Google Image search tools to limit results to openly licensed work

You may not:

  • Save, download, copy or capture the image directly from search results

Images from websites

If you have found an image you like through google image search or other means, visit the original source by clicking the search results. Provided that the image is legally uploaded by the copyright holder,

You may:

  • Reuse one (1) image in an controlled educational environment (e.g. the classroom or LMS)

Without the permission of the copyright holder, you may NOT:

  • Reuse multiple images
  • Alter or edit or revise the image
  • Share or publish or redistribute the image outside an educational setting

Before using make sure of the following:

  • Visit the source of the image rather than capturing image directly from search results
  • The image legally uploaded to the website by the copyright holder
  • That the title, author, source and licence (if applicable) for the image is included in your teaching materials
  • There is no clearly visible restriction that prohibits sharing or reuse

If you require more than one image from a single source, you will need to seek copyright permissions. Refer to the Seeking Copyright Permissions section of this guide, or contact copyright@ontariotechu.ca 

Images in print

This pertains to images in a printed volume such as art books or magazines or newspapers.

You may:

  • Physically or digitally copy one (1) image from the work for reuse in a controlled educational setting (e.g. the classroom or LMS)

Without the permission of the copyright holder, you may NOT:

  • Physically or digitally copy multiple images from the work
  • Alter or edit or revise the image
  • Share or publish or distribute the image outside of a controlled educational environment

Before using make sure of the following:

  • Cite the image including title, author, source and licence (if applicable) in your teaching materials
  • Check that there is no clearly visible restriction that prohibits sharing or reuse

Images found in the Library's online collection

The Library licenses electronic materials that are accessible through the Library's catalogue. If you find an image in one these resources, such as an ebook or article pdf,

You may:

  • Refer to the source material's license summary to determine permitted use
  • If linking is permitted, share the link to the work
  • If printing and distribution is permitted, download and distribute a copy in a controlled classroom environment

Without the permission of the copyright holder, you may NOT:

  • Save, download, copy, capture or edit the image

Before using make sure of the following:

  • You have referred to permitted uses in the license information
  • That the title, author, source and licence (if applicable) for the image is included in your teaching materials
  • There is no clearly visible restriction that prohibits sharing or reuse
