Print Materials & Copyright

In general, you may reproduce a short excerpt, up to 10% of a print work or a single chapter, article, encyclopedia entry or newspaper article from a collection for educational purposes, on the premises of Ontario Tech or within the Canvas LMS, for an audience consisting primarily of students enrolled in a course.

Remember to cite the copied work correctly, including author, title and source in the citation.

You may:

  • Include quotations accompanied by proper scholarly citation
  • Reproduce a short excerpt of the book
    • No more than 10%
    • Or one (1) chapter

If the book is a compilation of works (short stories, essays, poems), you may:

  • Reproduce one (1) work from the entire book

You may not:

  • Reproduce more than one chapter/entry
  • Reproduce more than 10% of the book
  • Quote the book without proper citation

Before using:

  • Ensure that the title, author, and source of the excerpt are clearly included in any reproductions
  • Consider using the Library's Course Reserves service to share work with students

If you require more than a short excerpt, you will need to seek copyright permissions. Refer to the Seeking Copyright Permissions section of this guide, or contact copyright@ontariotechu.ca 

The following applies to scholarly articles found in print journals, entries found physical encyclopedias or dictionaries, or articles found in print newspapers and magazines.

You may:

  • Reproduce one (1) article/entry from the entire work
    • E.g. One (1) article from a journal volume
    • E.g. One (1) article from a print newspaper
    • E.g. One (1) entry from an encyclopedia
  • Quote short passages or sentences or statements
    • Include proper citation

You may not:

  • Reproduce more than one article/entry from the printed volume
    • E.g. You may not reproduce three (3) articles from a single newspaper edition
  • Quote the article/entry without proper citation

Before using:

  • Consider using the Library's Course Reserves service to share work with students
